Parking Regulations

Most parking regulations are covered by Wisconsin State Law, while others are governed by local city ordinance.  On this page all parking laws will be covered to help you understand exactly what parking restrictions exist.

Prohibited Parking Restrictions
No person shall stop or leave any vehicle standing in any of the following places except temporarily for the purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading or in receiving or discharging passengers and while the vehicle is attended by a licensed operator so that it may promptly be moved in case of an emergency or to avoid obstruction of traffic.

Any violation in this category is subject to a $25.00 fine.

  • No closer than 15 feet to the near limits of a crosswalk.
  • No closer than 10 feet from a fire hydrant.
  • No closer than 25 feet from a railroad crossing.
  • No closer than 4 feet from the edge of a driveway.
  • No closer than 2 feet from another parked vehicle.
  • You must park within 12 inches of the curb.
  • No parking from 7am to 4pm in a school zone on school days.
  • No parking on or across a sidewalk.
  • Winter Parking Rules (click here for details).
  • No parking for longer than 24 hours at the same location on any city street or alley.  Vehicles must be moved at least once during a 24-hour period.  Moved means that the vehicle is driven and used for a purpose.  Simply pushing or moving the vehicle a short distance does not satisfy moving the vehicle.
  • Upon any portion of a street where at the time when parking is prohibited, limited or restricted be official traffic signs.

Other Restrictions
The following are a list of other parking restrictions followed by the fine amount if there is a violation.

  • Timed Zones, this includes parking meters and those areas posted by signs.  ($9.00 fine)
  • Handicap Parking, this includes all parking lots, public and private.  ($75.00 fine)
  • Snow Emergency Violation (click here for details).  ($50.00 fine)

Fines for some of these violations listed above may increase if not paid within a specified time.

There are two locations that all parking tickets can be paid for:
+  City Hall Finance Dept.  (2nd floor)
    828 Center Ave.   Sheboygan
Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.
+  City Hall Police Desk   (1st floor)
    828 Center Ave.   Sheboygan
During non-business hours when Finance Dept. is closed.

Abandoned Vehicles
In the City of Sheboygan, any vehicle is considered abandoned if any one of these three (3) conditions exist.  This ordinance covers both public and private property.

  1. If the vehicle is in public view.  Covering the vehicle with a tarp or other type covering is not permissible.  It must be inside a garage.
  2. If the vehicle is not properly registered in the State of Wisconsin.  This means that the vehicle's registration must be up-to-date and not suspended.
  3. If the vehicle is inoperable.  Inoperable according to State Statues and Administrative Transportation rules is as follows.  Just turning a key so a vehicle can start is not operable.  The vehicle has to be street legal.  Some examples would be that all doors, the hood, all windows have to open and close, all glass intact, all turn signals and lights operable, all tires inflated.  The vehicle in situations such as a 24 hour violation, must be able to be driven away from the street in had been parked on to be in compliance.

Any vehicle found in violation of the abandoned vehicle ordinance will be towed and the owner can be subject to a fine.

The City of Sheboygan Zoning Ordnance requires all vehicles to be parked on a paved surface, not on unpaved surface such as dirt, grass or wood chips.

The fine amounts associated with these violations are subject to change if the city council deems it appropriate.

For further information about abandon vehicles, please refer to State Statute section 118-276.
