Sheboygan Police Department - 2008

Wisconsin Retirement Fund: > City pays 100% of members' share 

Uniform Allowance: > $520.00 every year thereafter 

Health Insurance: > City pays 92.5% 

Dental Insurance: > City pays 85% 

Life Insurance: > City pays 11 months of calendar year after completion of 1 year service. ( Coverage to the next thousand of their salary) 

Holidays: > 10 days of compensatory pay in lieu of holidays 

Vacation: 

101 hours after completion of 1 to 4 years service 

144 hours after completion of 5 to 9 years service 

170 hours after completion of 10 to 14 years service 

229 hours after completion of 15 years service 

Work schedule is 5 days on followed by 3 days off throughout the year.
A work week includes four 8-hour days and one 10 1/2 hour day. 

Sick Leave:  Accumulate 1 day for each completed month of service up to 144 days. Excess of 144 will be pooled.

Additional Qualifications and Essential Job Functions

POLICE OFFICER.............................................Code C10420P 

Nature of Work: 

A police officer under general supervision carries out departmental functions primarily to prevent criminal activity and to provide day-to-day police services to the community. The Police Officer will insure, within the scope of their authority, the constitutional rights of all citizens and will impartially enforce the laws of the State of Wisconsin and the ordinances of the City of Sheboygan. 

Typical Duties: (These examples do not list all of the duties which may be assigned.) 

1. * Operate a law enforcement vehicle during both day and night; in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and on road conditions affected by fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow. 

2. * Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest and when force may be used and to what degree. 

3.* Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications. 

4. * Communicate effectively while gathering information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informants. 

5. * Effect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense. 

6. * Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. 

7. * Demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings. 

8. * Conduct visual and audio surveillance. 

9. * Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting law enforcement patrol vehicles; physically lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects, climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles, through openings (doors and windows); jumping from elevated surfaces, crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven surfaces; using body force to gain entrance through barriers. 

10. * Load, unload, aim and fire handguns, shotguns, and other agency firearms from a variety of positions, under conditions of stress, at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards. 

11. * Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, detaining people and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons. 

12. * Engage in law enforcement patrol functions that include working different shifts, walking foot patrol and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure that they are secure. 

13. * Effectively communicate with people by giving information and directions, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes. 

14. * Read and comprehend legal and non legal documents, including the preparation and processing of documents such as citations, affidavits and warrants. 

15. * Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas. 

16. * Detect and collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions. 

17. * Perform all lawful assignments as prescribed by the Chief of Police or his designee and perform miscellaneous services as required by state law, city ordinance and department policy.
