K-9 Bailey

"A professionally trained K-9 is an indispensable ally to the
community and law enforcement."

The Sheboygan Police Department added a new narcotic detection canine to the department on March 6th, 2006.  Officer Trisha Burington took to the streets with her new partner, "Bailey", a yellow Labrador.  The ever changing atmosphere and mode of operation of criminal elements within the City of Sheboygan has demonstrated the need for a narcotics canine team.  The department has seen an increase in narcotic arrests and drug related crimes over the past several years.  Officer Burington and Bailey are a proactive component that joins specific efforts to fight drugs within the community.  The other efforts include the continued collaboration of the Sheboygan County MEG Unit, the Sheboygan Police Street Crimes Unit and Community Policing Unit.

Sheboygan's K-9 Team assists on search warrants, drug sniffs on traffic stops, school searches, and consent searches as requested.

In addition, Officer Burington and Bailey will work closely with the Sheboygan Area School District and community service groups by providing educational presentations.  The department recognizes that education of youth and the general public is a priority in curtailing drug activity.  The canine presentations will provide insight into the consequences of narcotics use and assist in building a positive relationship with the public by working together in combating narcotics.

Officer Burington and Bailey trained in Albuquerque, New Mexico, concentrated solely on narcotics.  The initial certification course lasted five weeks and requires continual training in order to maintain strong, reliable skills.

The Sheboygan Police Department has maintained an active canine program since 1989.  The first handler was Lt. Jeff Johnston and his partner, "Cello".  Officer David Adams and his partner, "Daro", took over in 1995.  In January of 2000, Officer Eric Edson's dual purpose canine, "Duc", began his tour of duty.  Amongst many of the accomplishments of the program, Officer Eric Edson was named "Rookie Handler of the Year" in 2001 by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Canine Handlers Association.

Officer Burington and Bailey are available for group demonstrations.  Demonstrations can be scheduled by contacting Officer Burington.

The photos above and below are the result of a drug search at a local storage unit in the City of Sheboygan on November 6, 2007.  Acting on information K-9 Bailey was assigned to check and made a hit on one of the storage units.  Based on what K-9 Bailey discovered a search warrant was obtained.  The drugs shown in the photo that were seized included marijuana, heroin and cocaine.  In the photo above with K-9 Bailey is his handler, Officer Burington and two members of the Street Crime Unit.
